Ghost Libs Halloween Game

Ghost Libs Halloween Game

This participatory ghost story party game is a real howl.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Ghost story
Cue cards
Assorted noisemakers

HOW TO PLAY:

1. Ahead of time, brainstorm and write down the framework for a freaky story, leaving blanks for many of the nouns. Then cut out twenty 1- by 3-inch cue cards from poster board. On each, write a noun, anything from tombstones to tennis balls (consider, of course, your kids' reading levels) and put the cards into a hat. Next, gather a bunch of noisemakers, such as whistles, birdcalls, pitch pipes, kazoos and triangles, and place in a basket.

2. Have the kids sit in a circle. Hand a noisemaker to each child and let him or her reach in and pick two cue cards from the hat.

3. Instruct the children to make a racket with their instruments every time you say noise and to shout out one of their words each time you point to them. For example, when you say "and then the old woman heard a frightful noise," the kids should blast away.

4. When you reach an appropriate and suspenseful moment, such as, "The monster reached deep into his backpack and pulled out a huge, ugly..." you should turn to the first child in the circle and let him or her belt out a word.

5. Continue, a la Mad Libs, improvising your story until you can draw it to a scary, silly, or most likely nonsensical, noisy end.

Halloween Recipe - Haunted Gingerbread House

Haunted Gingerbread House

Create a creepy gingerbread house decorated with your favorite candies and cookies. It's a fun project for the entire family!

Gingerbread and Decorations:

1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup full-flavor molasses
1/3 cup cold water
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Assorted candies and cookies

Frosting:

1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon full-flavor molasses

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 9-inch square pan and 15x10x1-inch rectangular pan. In large bowl, mix brown sugar, shortening and molasses until well blended. Stir in cold water. Stir in remaining gingerbread ingredients except candies. Press one-third of dough into square pan; press remaining dough into rectangular pan.

2. Bake 1 pan at a time about 15 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched in center. Cool 5 minutes; turn upside down onto large cutting surface. Immediately cut as shown in diagram below (cut windows if desired). Cool completely, about 25 minutes.

3. In medium bowl, mix 1 cup of the powdered sugar and remaining frosting ingredients until smooth. Stir in enough remaining powdered sugar to make stiff frosting. (If frosting becomes too stiff, stir in additional milk.)

4. Decorate front of house as desired using frosting and assorted candies and cookies. For windows as shown in photo, cut yellow tissue paper slightly larger than outline of windows. Brush paper with vegetable oil and "glue" to back side of windows, using frosting. Use frosting to attach supports to back of house, sidewalk to front of house, door and sign to front of house and fence to sidewalk. Complete decorating as desired.

Halloween Party Ideas - House-to-Haunted-House Party

House-to-Haunted-House Party

With this house-to-house party, a great holiday is made even better by extending the fun, varying the menu and bringing families and neighbors together. Don't be scared. The point here isn't for one family to throw a monstrous bash. Three families split up the work, each hosting a part of the party at their haunts. And the kids will love it: They'll get to gobble some creepy cuisine, play wickedly fun games and take home a memory that will last far longer than their candy hoard. Here are three party suggestions:

GHOST HOUSE:

Children meet the Ghost Host, who welcomes kids into a world of white, fright and pure delight. A few days before the party, make Giggly Gravestones and Ghost Wind Socks to decorate the entrance of your eerie estate and round up old sheets, lace and craft-store cobwebs to dress the windows and cover the furniture. Make as much food as you can in advance so you can focus on setting the mood on the day of the party.

MONSTER HOUSE:

Host Dr. Frank N. Beans (a playful parent with a mad glint in his eyes) has a problem. His grumpy green giant needs a head-to-toe checkup. The job's too big for one madman, and that's where the children enter. They squish and squeeze the monster's guts until he has a clean bill of horrible health. Prior to the party, set up the doctor's lab: Post clocks set to the wrong time, line windows with spooky Jack-O-Lanterns, round up wacky lights (from lava lamps to strobe lights) and make a party tape of dripping sounds. Plan everything in advance so you can have fun too.

WIZARD HOUSE:

On their third and final stop, trick or treaters are off to see the wizard--Magic Wanda, a crazy clairvoyant (played by an adventurous mom) who'll tempt kids with tantalizing treats and predict their futures (she has, of course, a crystal ball, but one unlike any we've ever seen). To add celestial seasoning to your abode, string cookies across the ceiling, drape your furniture with silk and velvet cloth, attach stick-on glow-in-the-dark moons and stars to the walls, and make a homemade tape of songs with lyrics focusing on magic, such as "Magic Bus" and "Magical Mystery Tour." Once under Magic Wanda's power, kids may not want to come back to earth. Return them to the present with a take-home treat and the promise of more magic to come next year.
